Last Updated on

2020 Sea-Doo Fish Pro 170 is one of the most versatile and well-known models in the Sea-Doo fleet but there is often confusion about exactly why this is model so popular. Read on ahead to find out the reason!

There are around 700 million recreation anglers worldwide and many of them are considering to buy a personal watercraft for fishing purposes.

PWC fishing is becoming more and more popular in the US and thus there is a greater market demand for special fishing PWC models, as well as the necessary gear and accessories.

Keeping with the rising trend of PWC fishing, Sea-Doo grabbed the opportunity and released the Sea-Doo Fish Pro.

This special model was designed in collaboration with traditional and PWC fishermen to polish the concept to the utmost. This unique model is dedicated and designed especially for fishing purposes, but there are numerous other fun activities that you can use it for (even for wakeboarding!).

In this article you can learn more about this unique model’s specifications, features, accessories and much more.

Along with a basic review of its performance we will also be comparing the 2020 Sea-Doo Fish Pro with the Kawasaki Ultra LX-F, which is advertised as the “dedicated fishing Jet Ski”, as well as the Yamaha FX HO which is arguably the “best fishing WaveRunner” from Yamaha in the market.

Hull and engine

When it comes to PWC fishing, one of the most important factors to consider is the stability of the hull. A huge proportion of customers are looking for smaller and nimble watercrafts to enjoy activities on the water but it should be noted that these models are not suitable for fishing purposes.

Sea-Doo Fish Pro, for one, offers what can arguably be regarded as the most stable hull on the market. The model is based on the the Sea-Doo GTX line’s ST3 hull, but it’s longer because of the Extended Rear Platform.

Fish Pro is powered by a 4 stroke, 170 HP, 1.630 cc Rotax engine which is cooled with closed loop cooling system to keep out debris and salt water. This Rotax engine is a naturally aspirated (Na) model, which means you can’t find a supercharger unit in it. You must be wondering why a (Na) Rotax engine is important for you. There are two answers to this question; reliability and better gas mileage.

Reliability on the water is always a key point; it’s even more crucial if you go out to the open sea. Therefore, it is important to avoid supercharged engines when choosing to buy a new PWC for fishing purposes. Models with naturally aspirated engines also have less maintenance needs and a lesser chance to breakdown as well.

In addition to reliability, naturally aspirated (not-supercharged) engines offer much better fuel efficient rides as well. This means that you can go longer distances without a need to refuel your watercraft. This is especially helpful while fishing on a watercraft as it can take you a long ride just to reach a perfect spot for fishing.

What’s new with the 2020 Fish Pro?

The 2020 Sea-Doo Fish Pro’s large front storage is located right in front of you when you’re riding on the PWC and it open right in front of you allowing you to use it while you sit on the seat. This pioneer storage solution is unique on the market and extremely convenient to use:

Additionally, it includes clever organizer units for your smaller stuff along with a small glove-box in front of you for your phone and smaller gears.

The rear section of the seat is removable which means you can make use of even greater space if you want to add extra accessories. Moreover, with the Sea-Doo’s pioneer LinQ system, you can attach the cooler, storage units and even extra fuel cans to the platform really easily.

The fishing rod holders are attached to the side of the cooler. There is no need for huge and heavy racks on the rear platform!

On the other hand, if you don’t want to take a large amount of extra gear with you, you can use this large aft deck for fishing. Because of the extreme stability and non-slip surfaces, you can enjoy countless safe and enjoyable hours of fun!

As far as the 2020 Sea-Doo Fish Pro fuel range is concerned, you will not be disappointed once again. The fuel range of the Fish Pro is outstanding because of its fuel efficient engine which can help you save quite a few dollars from the need of less fuel.

Additionally, the Sea-Doo Fish Pro is equipped with the Intelligent Throttle Control (ITC) system. This system gives the driver full control over the propulsion system which means that the engine starts in neutral without moving the PWC forward immediately.

You can control the speed manually or you can even choose the speed from pre-set settings. With the built in “ECO mode” you can set the best cruise speed very conveniently which means the most fuel efficient rides and the highest MPG for you.

Competitor fishing Jet Ski and WaveRunner

Before we go further into the specifications and prices, it should be noted that we can find good models for PWC fishing in the competitors’ fleets as well. Taking into consideration all the requirements that are important for a fishing PWC, we can conclude that the

best fishing PWCs are the largest,
3-seater models, with 150-180 HP engines.

In this comparison part of this article, we will compare the Fish Pro to the Yamaha FX HO and the Kawasaki Ultra LX models. Many experts recommend these models for fishing purposes and based on many PWC fishermen’s experience, these watercrafts truly are the best for PWC fishing.

This is represented in the fact that the Kawasaki Ultra LX-F is advertised as the “dedicated fishing Jet Ski”

This model is actually a stock Kawasaki Ultra LX, which is fully equipped with several high quality accessories and offered as a “ready to go” Fishing Jet Ski. It comes with a seat with 3-rider capacity 212 L of storage, stainless steel rod holder, a 70L cooler and a fish finder.

Unfortunately, this Ultra LX-F model is currently available only in New Zealand.

However, there are hopes that it will be available in the US market soon as PWC fishing becomes more and more popular. Until then, if you prefer Kawasaki, you can still purchase a stock Ultra LX and add the necessary equipment yourself. This can be your own DIY Fishing Jet Ski!

Similar is the case with Yamaha. If your dream is a fishing WaveRunner, you will have to purchase the necessary equipment separately. To take a closer look at how you can setup your own WaveRunner, don’t miss this video:

Moving on, let’s compare the 3 models by figures!

On the other hand, there isn’t much difference in the width and height of the models and curb weights are pretty close as well.

PWC Fishing means tons of gear and extra fuel that you have to take with you. This makes the capacity of your PWC a major issue!

If we look at the numbers, it is clear that the Kawasaki outperforms its competitors in terms of storage capacity with 56 gallons while Sea-Doo Fish Pro has the best weight limit with 600 pounds.

All of these models can carry 3 riders and the gas tank sizes are pretty similar; around 20 gallons.

For fishermen, the performance of the watercraft is not much of a big deal which is why there is no need for us to compare the performance specifications of the three models.
