1993-1997 Kawasaki Super Sport Xi Review and Specs [Video]

The Super Sport Xi (a.k.a. 750SS Xi) was a 2-stroke sit-down Kawasaki Jet Ski manufactured from 1992 through 1997. It borrowed its 2-seater runabout hull and most of its features from the base 750SS, but it utilized a more powerful, dual-carb engine configuration rated at 75 HP. The popular Super Sport Xi was phased out by the upgraded Xi Sport in 1998.

If you want to find out more about this popular 2-stroke Jet Ski, this post is for you.

1993-1997 Kawasaki Super Sport Xi Review

Kawasaki Super Sport Xi Hull

Kawasaki introduced the high-performance Super Sport Xi for the 1993 model year, as the bigger brother of the proven 750SS.

Because of this kinship, the Super Sport Xi was often referred to as 750SS Xi or just 750Xi.

These machines shared the same deep-V platform, measuring 99.6 inches in length, 40.6 inches in width, and 37.2 inches in height.

This massive SMC Jet Ski hull proved to be much more stable and predictable than the predecessor TS hull.

Keeping rigidity in mind, it featured an aluminum plate reinforcement. The front of the hull also had a “step” designed to reduce bow spray.

The dry weight of the Super Sport Xi was 388-415 pounds depending on the model year.

The ski also enjoyed a modern top deck design, which was much more appealing than the outdated “moped-like” deck of the 650TS.

It came standard with a comfortable 2-rider seat, an 8.7-gallon fuel tank including a 1.6-gallon reserve, and a 2.4-quart oil reservoir under the seat.

The front of the ski housed a standard bow storage, but no glovebox.

Kawasaki Super Sport Xi Engine and Propulsion

The power source of the Kawasaki Super Sport Xi was a 2-stroke, 743cc, dual-carb, vertical twin engine rated at 75 HP. This unit was also known as the “twin-carb 750 Kawasaki Jet Ski engine.”

From 1992 through 1995, this power source featured a small-pin configuration but was upgraded to a big-pin configuration for the 1996 model year.

The key features of the Kawasaki Super Sport Xi engine were as follows:

Although they offered the same horsepower, the big-pin engine had very different characteristics than its small-pin predecessor.

The key differences between these configurations were as follows:750 Small-Pin engine:

  • Ported for bottom end power
  • Smaller connecting rod ends and wrist pins (hence the name “Small Pin”)
  • Lower compression ratio (7.0:1)
  • Lighter weight
  • Lower durability
750 Big-Pin engine:
  • Different ignition timing and port timing tuned for top speed
  • Enlarged connecting rod ends and wrist pins (hence the name “Big-Pin”)
  • Higher compression ratio (7.2:1)
  • Higher exhaust ports
  • Smaller carburetors, inlet tracts, and reed cages, ensuring a faster inlet air speed
  • Revamped, more durable crankshaft
  • Heavier weight
  • Increased durability
  • More engine power
Due to its high power and weaker engine internals, the small-pin, twin-carb 750 engine was less durable and reliable than its big-pin successor.

The propulsion system of the Super Sport Xi was an axial-flow, single-stage jet pump utilizing a 3-blade impeller. This high-performance pump produced a maximum thrust of 628 pounds.

The fuel consumption of the Kawasaki Super Sport Xi was 7.4 GPH at WOT, which ensured a cruising range of 57 miles or a riding time of 1 hour and 11 minutes.

Kawasaki Super Sport Xi Features

The Super Sport Xi inherited its advanced features from the single-carb 750SS, which were as follows:

  • Dashboard with tachometer and trim indicator
  • Display panel with oil and fuel level warning lights, fuel indicator lights, and an engine overheating warning light
  • Choke knob
  • Fuel knob
  • Handlebar-mounted start/stop buttons
  • Shut-off switch with safety lanyard
  • Front storage compartment
  • Fire extinguisher compartment (under the storage case)
  • Rear storage pocket
  • Tool kit
  • Drain plugs
  • Finger throttle with a throttle limiter
  • Tow hook
  • Mooring cleats
  • Rear grab handle
  • Sponsons
  • Underwater exhaust outlet
  • Deck mats
The SS Xi was one of the first Kawasaki Jet Skis that came with a real dashboard mounted on the steering handlebar cover. It featured an analog tachometer, a trim indicator gauge, and an oval Kawasaki logo in the center.

Kawasaki marketed the Super Sport Xi until 1997 when it was phased out by the more powerful Xi Sport.

1994 Kawasaki Super Sport XiR

A lesser-known brother of the Super Sport Xi was the 1994 Kawasaki Super Sport XiR. As the name suggests (R here is for Racing) this machine was specifically designed for racing. The XiR was a limited edition model in which only 500 units were produced.

It came standard with the dual-carb, big-pin 743cc engine, an aftermarket exhaust system, and it was built on a purpose-built race hull.

To increase hull strength, it featured a carbon fiber reinforcement, that added some pounds to its overall weight.

This ski wasn’t known for extreme speed, but it had outstanding cornering abilities.

Many riders agree that the XiR was one of the best jet ski race hulls ever built!

To the greatest regret of 2-stroke jet ski enthusiasts, this model is very rarely found on the used market.
