The Kawasaki Jet Ski weight specs can vary between 551 and 1074 pounds.

Sea-Doos arrive with 406 – 981 pounds while you can find Yamaha Waverunners in the 336 – 964 pounds range.

It can be said that the weight of a watercraft is directly linked to its performance. The greater the engine and the bigger the hull, the heavier the watercraft is meant to be.

There are separate categories under which different models lie depending on their size, price, and performance. The main categories include Rec-Lite, Recreation, Luxury/Performance, and Stand up.

The stand-ups are the most basic kind. They are the lightest in weight and have rider capacity of only one person.

They require a certain level of athletic skill to be ridden safely and they are not very easy to handle out in the waters.

The Yamaha Superjet is a really popular stand up watercraft on the market. It weighs around 300 pounds and is also one of the smallest available PWC.

The recently returned stand up Jet Ski, the Kawasaki SX-R arrives with 503 pounds net weight and 150 HP performance.

Next up is the most affordable sit-down model; the rec-lite or the recreation.

These can be expected to weigh between 400-700 pounds and are relatively light in weight as well.

The Sea-Doo Spark series features the lightest-weight sit-down models.

The performance or the luxury kind of PWCs are the real deals. They can weigh up to 1100 lbs and they are undoubtedly beasts in the water.

The size also, however, comes with a great deal of upkeep and storage needs.

What is curb weight and dry weight?

When the manufacturers of different PWCs specify the weight of their models, they usually use either of these two terms.

The dry weight is the weight of the watercraft alone without any gas, fuel or gear.

This weight is always to be considered exactly how it is stated and more measurements and calculations might be necessary once you equip the watercraft.

On the other hand, the curb weight of a watercraft is the weight just before it is ready to be put out to the water.

This includes the oil, fuel and all the accessories that might be attached to it.

Kawasaki is the only manufacturer that provides all the official curb Jet Ski weights. The exact description of what a curb weight is according to Kawasaki is given below:

“Curb weight includes all necessary materials and fluids to operate correctly,
full tank of fuel (more than 90 percent capacity) and tool kit (if supplied).”

This is the reason why Kawasaki’s models seem heavier when compared to their counterparts.

In order for there to be a fair comparison, we have to reduce the weight of Kawasaki Jet Skis to their dry weight beforehand. (sample calculation of Ultra 310 Jet Ski series)

This can be done by estimating 1 gallon of fuel to weigh 6.25 pounds. This multiplied by 20 will give us the total weight of fuel; 130 pounds.

Another liquid needed in the Jet Ski is the engine oil. That is estimated to weight not more than 10 lbs (1.79 pounds/quarts).

This gives us a total of 140 pounds to subtract from the weight mentioned on any Ultra 310 Jet Ski model to achieve its dry weight.

Based on this calculation, the heaviest Jet Ski weighs around just 900 pounds which is not greatly contrasting from their competitors’ models with a similar specification.

Weight of the trailer

The trailer that is needed to carry the watercraft is also a crucial component of the whole experience.

Just like the crafts, the trailers come in various sizes and weight limits. It is very important to make accurate calculations when choosing which type of trailer you want for your PWC.

This is because every trailer has a different towing capacity and if the weight of your PWC exceeds that capacity, you could be in trouble.

A watercraft trailer usually weighs between 200-300 lbs and can carry a load of up to 1000 lbs.

These numbers can vary according to the size, material and other factors affecting a trailer. In case you need to transport multiple watercrafts at once, you will need a larger double place trailer or even a 4-placed one.

It is very important for the calculations to be correct. The weight of the trailer, the weight of the PWC and the carrying capacity are all crucial numbers to pay attention to.

Also, keep in mind the weight of fuel or gas in the watercraft and any additional accessory or equipment that might be in the picture.

Can a car tow a Jet Ski, Sea-Doo or Waverunner?

The type of vehicle you choose to tow your PWC should solely depend on the former’s carrying capacity.

A PWC can be towed using a car, a truck or an SUV given that its total weight does not exceed the carrying capacity of the tow vehicle. The type of trailer is also an important consideration to be made.

Moreover, with the proper equipment and accessories, almost all cars are able to effectively tow a PWC as long as the capacity limit is adhered to. However, it is recommended that you do not test the towing capacity of your car and purchase a lightweight model.

The stand-ups like Yamaha Superjet and the SX-R Jet Ski, or the rec-lites are the lightest (and the most affordable) models on the market. These will be sure to not put any extra burden on your car.

If you already own a truck or an SUV that you can use to tow the PWC, you can conveniently go for a heavier watercraft as well.

Perhaps the main reason behind the extreme importance of the towing capacity of your vehicle is the use of brakes and ramps. If the load is too heavy, the car might not be able to stop properly causing damage to either people or property.

On the other hand, when ramps are being used, the heavy load has the potential to pull your vehicle into the water with it.

Therefore, it is imperative for you to prevent such incidences by adhering to the carrying capacity on your towing vehicle.
