Yamaha VX-C Review

Powersport rental companies often seek the most durable and affordable machines, and jet ski rental shops are no exception.

Yamaha grabbed the opportunity by releasing the VX-C in 2019 as the first purpose-built rental WaveRunner (C here stands for Commercial).

It’s safe to say that this model is almost identical to the base VX, except that it has a simpler design featuring a completely black hull and fewer decals on the top deck. The VX-C also lacks reboarding steps and the advanced RiDE brake and reverse system. On top of that, it’s $1,200 cheaper and slightly lighter than the base VX.

Thanks to the absence of the RiDE brake and reverse system, the VX-C is more durable and reliable than its more advanced counterparts.

On the other hand, renters can expect a poorer riding experience on these skis. Why?

In a nutshell, without RiDE the ski doesn’t have brake and reverse and it also lacks a “neutral” gear. This means that the machine starts slowly moving forward when you fire up the engine, without you even touching the throttle.

To keep its price down, the manufacturer released the VX-C without a reboarding step, which would have made reboarding the ski much easier. The good news is that the ski can be equipped with an OEM or aftermarket reboarding step if needed.

Besides these differences, the commercial VX-C inherited its other features from the base VX.

Both of these models share the same SMC hull measuring 131.1 inches in length, 48.8 inches in width, and 47.2 inches in height.

The dry weight of the VX-C is only 701 pounds, which translates to a curb weight of 823 pounds.

Under the hood, you can find the proven TR-1 Yamaha Marine engine inherited from the R1 motorcycle series.

This 1049cc, 4-stroke, 125 HP, fuel-injected, non-supercharged triple is used across the entire EX and 1049cc VX models, as well as the Superjet.Engine power is delivered to a 155mm axial-flow jet pump via a direct driveshaft. Thanks to its powerful fuel-efficient engine, the VX-C can reach a top speed of about 53 mph and gets about 8.5 GPH at WOT.

Standard features of the VX-C include:

  • Multifunction gauge (speedo, tacho, volt, fuel level, warning lights)
  • Front storage bin
  • Glovebox with LED lighting, USB port, and 12 V outlet
  • Underseat storage box
  • Tow hook
  • Sponsons
  • Dual mirrors
  • Passenger grab handle
  • 2-piece ergonomic seat
  • Mooring cleats
  • Footwell drain
The main competitor of the VX-C was the 2019 Sea-Doo GTI PRO, which is no longer being produced.

What are the differences between the Yamaha VX-C and the VX?

In a nutshell, the key differences between the VX and the VX-C are that the latter:

  • Features a much simple design and graphic kits
  • Comes without the RiDE brake and reverse system
  • Lacks a reboarding step
  • Is 18-pounds lighter
  • Is more affordable ($9,999 vs. $11,199)
