2007-2009 Sea-Doo GTX 215 Review

2007-2009 Sea-Doo GTX 215 Hull and Top Deck

The Canadian manufacturer revamped its touring GTX line ever so slightly for the 2007 season.

This family included the base GTX 155 and the supercharged GTX 215.

These skis shared the same platform, measuring 130.3 inches in length, 48 inches in width, and 47.2 inches in height. The hull of the GTX was carried over from the predecessor GTX 4-TEC/SC without any noticeable changes and still featured the annoying OPAS fins.

Unlike the hull, the top deck of the GTX was heavily redesigned, returning with an all-new front hood and a more advanced seat. The latter got a stepped design and featured larger bolsters.

The dry weight of the supercharged GTX 215 was 805 pounds, 10 pounds more than its naturally-aspirated sibling.

Storage compartments included a rear storage basket, a glovebox, and standard bow storage. The latter featured an innovative sealed cap and a removable storage tray.

The GTX 215 enjoyed some exclusive features including an adjustable handlebar, recessed cargo cleats, and a removable receiver that was planted into the glovebox cover.

2007-2009 Sea-Doo GTX 215 Engine and Propulsion

The engine of the 2007-2009 Sea-Doo GTX 215 was the proven 4-stroke, 1494cc, SOHC, 3-cylinder Rotax 4-TEC engine rated at 215 HP. This power source was carried over from the predecessor GTX SC without any noticeable changes.

This power mill was offered in three different output variants, 130, 155, and 215 HP.

Besides the GTX 215, this supercharged 215 HP configuration was also used in performance models including the RXT 215 and the RXP 215.

The key features of this engine were as follows:

  • 4-stroke, 3-cylinder architecture
  • Supercharged, 52mm throttle body
  • 12 valves (4 per cylinder) with hydraulic lifters
  • Single over head camshaft (SOHC)
  • Compression ratio: 8.4:1
  • Performance: 215 HP
  • Water-cooled exhaust system
  • Dry sump lubrication system
  • Digital inductive ignition
  • Closed-loop cooling system
  • Electric starter
Thanks to its 4-stroke architecture and innovative fuel injection system, the GTX 215 offered extreme engine power along with plenty of torque.

Engine power was delivered to an axial-flow, single-stage jet pump, housing a stainless-steel impeller and a 10-vane stator.

2007-2009 Sea-Doo GTX 215 Performance

Designed to be a high-end touring Sea-Doo, the GTX 215 offered a smooth riding experience and excellent comfort.

Its roomy platform ensured plenty of deck space and it could carry two passengers and a lot of gear.

What’s more, the GTX 215 could keep up with many performance models thanks to its supercharged engine and high-performance jet pump. Despite the fairly heavy touring hull, it could hit 64-65 mph under ideal conditions.

This model was commonly used for a variety of water activities like wakeboarding, fishing, and even touring.

2007-2009 Sea-Doo GTX 215 Problems

Although the Sea-Doo GTX 215 was a well-designed machine, it still had some minor flaws, which were as follows:

  • Supercharger failure
  • Awkward thumb throttle
  • OPAS malfunctions
  • Lack of a brake system
Early supercharged Sea-Doos were known for their supercharger failures, and the GTX 215 was no exception. However, many of these issues could have been avoided with regular supercharger rebuilding.Another flaw of the ’07-’09 GTX 215 was its outdated thumb throttle lever, which caused a lot of hand fatigue and provided less precise handling.

What’s more, this model was equipped with deflective OPAS fins or rudders, which would come into operation even when they shouldn’t.

OPAS fins (or rudders) were intended to be an off-throttle steering assist system, but they were prone to being activated in choppy water conditions. These undesired activations caused many headaches for riders, which is why many of them removed these fins.

On top of that, the ’07-’09 GTX 215 came without an electric brake and reverse system. This was no surprise since Sea-Doo introduced its advanced iBR system in late 2008 on its flagship models.

2007-2009 Sea-Doo GTX 155 vs. GTX 215

Except for their different engines and a few features, the 2007-2009 Sea-Doo GTX 155 and 215 were almost identical. The extra features on the GTX 215 over the 155 were as follows:

  • 215 HP supercharged engine
  • Adjustable handlebar
  • Water depth display
  • Removable GPS receiver (located on the glovebox lid)
  • Recessed cargo cleats
  • Removable front storage tray
