2006-2010 Sea-Doo GTI 130 Review

By 2006, Sea-Doo had completely redesigned its popular GTI family. The new line returned with an entirely new platform and a 4-stroke engine.

The 2006-2010 Sea-Doo GTI 130 was marketed in three configurations, the base GTI, the GTI Rental, and the GTI SE. These skis were almost identical except the two latter came with more bells and whistles. This line was completed with the more powerful GTI SE 155.

The most advanced model was arguably the GTI SE, which came standard with a speedometer, dual mirrors, reboarding step, premium footwell mats, water temp. sensor, and ski tow eye.

2006-2010 Sea-Doo GTI 130 Hull and Deck

The 4-TEC GTI family was built on the all-new Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) composite hull measuring 127 inches in length, 49 inches in width, and 45.9 inches in height.

The curb weight of the base GTI was 732 pounds while the SE and the Rental weighed 747 pounds.

In contrast, the predecessor 2-stroke GTI hull was 121 inches long, 47 inches wide, and 41 inches high. The weight of these outdated machines varied between 623 and 700 pounds depending on the model.

The new 4-stroke GTIs were not only bigger and heavier, but they also returned with a progressive V-hull design and larger capacities.

They could carry three riders plus their gear up to a maximum of 602 pounds, 66 pounds more than the predecessor.

The revamped GTI deck housed a larger, 15.9-gallon fuel tank, standard bow storage, and a glovebox.

This body remained unchanged from 2006 through 2010 except for some cosmetic changes.

For 2011, Sea-Doo released its new GTI line including the 2011 GTI 130 and the GTI SE 155.

2006-2010 Sea-Doo GTI 130 Engine and Propulsion

The engine of the 2006-2010 Sea-Doo GTI 130 models was a 4-stroke, 1494cc, SOHC, 3-cylinder inline Rotax 4-TEC engine rated at 130 HP. (The GTI SE was available with both the 130 and 155 HP engine options.)

This power source debuted in the 2002 Sea-Doo GTX 4-TEC, but found its way into many other Sea-Doos over the years.

From 2006 onwards the entry-level Sea-Doo GTIs were exclusively manufactured with this innovative 4-stroke power source.

Thanks to its 4-stroke configuration and advanced features, the GTI 4-TEC engine offered smooth power delivery along with plenty of torque.

What’s more, it was significantly cleaner and far more fuel efficient than its 2-stroke counterparts.

Interestingly, it was the base engine of the more powerful 155 HP and the supercharged 215 HP engine configurations. This means that the 130 HP GTI was much less stressed than its bigger brothers, which translated to higher reliability.

All of these made the 4-stroke GTIs instantly popular among buyers.

2006-2010 Sea-Doo GTI 130 Performance

The new 4-TEC GTI was considered a great beginner jet ski, and with good reason.

Although it wasn’t the fastest ski on the lake, it had a reputation for easy handling and a predictable attitude.

Its roomy top deck offered plenty of space and it could carry a lot of gear or even two passengers.

Despite its large hull and moderate engine power, the 2006-2010 Sea-Doo GTI could hit 52-54 mph under ideal conditions.

2006-2010 Sea-Doo GTI 130 Problems

Based on our research, the most common problems of the 2006-2010 Sea-Doo GTIs were as follows:

  • Awkward thumb throttle
  • OPAS malfunctions
  • Exhaust valve failures
  • Lack of a brake system

There’s no question that one of the biggest flaws of the ’06-‘10 GTIs was an outdated thumb throttle lever.

Unlike finger throttle levers, this configuration ensured less precise handling and caused hand fatigue on longer rides.

Another problem with these skis was their deflective OPAS fins, which would come into operation when they shouldn’t.

It’s also good to know that 4-TEC Sea-Doo engines manufactured from 2004 through early 2006 suffered from exhaust valve failures.

The valves of these engines were prone to corroding, which often resulted in breakage or other malfunctions.

This issue was fixed sometime in 2006, so only the earliest models of this year might have been affected with this problem.

On top of that, the first 4-TEC GTIs were manufactured without a brake system.

This is no surprise since Sea-Doo introduced its iBR brake and reverse system in late 2008.
