Yamaha VX110 Sport Hull and Top Deck

The history of the legendary Yamaha VX PWC line started with the introduction of the VX110 Sport and Deluxe.

Both of these skis were introduced in 2005 but were re-branded to VX for the 2007 season.

Thanks to their affordable price and durable de-tuned engine, the VX line instantly become popular among recreational riders and rental shops as well.As a rule of thumb, these models shared the same all-new VX platform, which was specifically engineered for the 4-stroke MR1 engine.

This shell was 126.8 inches long and 46.1 inches wide, meaning that it was significantly larger than predecessor 2-stroke WaveRunner hulls.

It was also much heavier since the dry weight of these skis was 716 pounds.

In terms of capacities, the total weight limit of the VX hull was 530 pounds while its fuel tank was rated at 15.9 gallons.

The total storage capacity of the ski was 17.8 gallons, which was divided into a 1.4-gallon glovebox and a 16.4-gallon bow storage.

Yamaha VX110 Sport Engine

The heart of the Yamaha VX110 Sport was a de-tuned version of the “big-bore” MR1 engine. This unit was a 4-stroke, 1052cc, inline-3 Yamaha marine engine derived from the R1 motorcycle series.

In the VX110 Sport and Deluxe, the performance of this engine was restricted to 102hp at 8000 RPM. (In contrast, the same engine in the FX line delivered 160hp at 10,000 RPM.)

Thanks to its lower RPM limit and tamed performance, VX110s and their successors were more reliable than any other WaveRunner of that time.

Although the VX110 Sport wasn’t the fastest PWC in the Yamaha lineup, it offered an exciting yet safe riding experience.

Its hull was stable and predictable even at lower speeds, and beginners especially appreciated its smooth easy handling.

Another key advantage of this ski was that it used significantly less fuel than performance and luxury models.

The claimed fuel economy of the VX 110 Sport was 7.4 gph at WOT, which ensured a mileage of 6.5 mpg. Cruising at 40 mpg, it could be increased to 8.5 mpg.

This ski had a fuel capacity of 15.9 gallons, which offered a cruising range of more than 2 hours.

Yamaha VX110 Sport Problems

Even though the VX110 Sport was one of the most reliable WaveRunner in the 2000s, it had some minor problems.

It’s safe to say that one of the most common issues of this ski was its corroding spark plugs. In case of excessive corrosion, the plugs were prone to rusting and breaking off in the cylinder head.

Fortunately, applying some anti-seize grease on the plugs easily prevented this issue.

Another common problem of this ski was its weak throttle cable, which often cracked or got stuck, causing throttle malfunctions.

Because of this, it was recommended to inspect the throttle cable as part of the annual maintenance.
