The power source of the ’02-’03 Sea-Doo GTX DI was the advanced direct-injected Rotax 947 DI, inherited from the 2001 model. This 952cc, 2-stroke Rotax twin featured direct orbital fuel injection, oil injection, an open-loop cooling system, and the innovative RAVE exhaust valves.
As the name suggests (DI= Direct Injection), this unit utilized a “real” direct fuel injection system. This engine was equipped with a secondary system designed to atomize the fuel before injecting it into the top of the cylinder heads.
Therefore, the 947 DI engine used both a fuel pump and an air compressor to boost the pressure and inject the fuel into the high-pressure side of the engine.
(In contrast, the semi-direct RFI (Rotax Fuel Injection) only used a fuel pump and injectors to inject the fuel into the low-pressure side.)Although the innovative DI direct-injection system was ahead of its time, it added a lot of complexity to the engine. Because of this, the Rotax 947 DI engine was much harder to troubleshoot and repair than its RFI and carbed brothers.
Therefore, if you are in the marketplace for a vintage 2-stroke Sea-Doo GTX, you may want to stay clear of the GTX DI models.
The complex engine in these skis provides great fuel economy and outstanding performance – as long as it’s running. But should there be any malfunction, a special scanner tool is required to diagnose and troubleshoot the issue.
This means that the DI engine is not easy to fix or even maintain in your garage. Therefore, it’s recommended that you choose a 4-stroke or a carbed 2-stroke Sea-Doo instead.
