This family’s most powerful and rarest model was the lesser-known 2001 RXX. This ski was a factory-built racing Sea-Doo marketed for racers and performance-minded riders.

The RXX was actually a modified RX 951 with a lighter hull and a series of aftermarket performance parts. Surprisingly, all of them were installed by the manufacturer, so the RXX was marketed as a “race-ready” Sea-Doo out of the crate.

The carbed RX and RXX shared the same base engine, the dual-carb “Silver” Rotax 947 RAVE twin. This 951cc, 2-stroke power source offered 130 HP in stock condition.

But thanks to the aforementioned modifications, the Sea-Doo RXX was boosted from 130 HP up to an incredible 160 HP.

Besides the engine, the pump, seat, and steering system were also upgraded for optimal performance and handling.

Thanks to these advanced features, the claimed top speed of the RXX was 70 mph, but according to, the ski topped out at 65 mph.

The engine of the RXX was nestled in the proven semi-V RX hull debuted for the 2000 model year. This entirely new hull and top deck were a huge improvement compared to the predecessor GSX Limited.

Regarding dimensions, this platform measured 112 inches in length, 47 inches in width, and 41 inches in height.

But unlike the standard RX models, the RXX came with a special hand-layered hull, which resulted in some noticeable weight savings. Thanks to this lighter body, the dry weight of the RXX was only 5 pounds heavier than the base RX (despite numerous aftermarket performance mods!).

This well-designed hull provided a great balance between comfort and performance.

Its deep, 23.5-degree entry cut the chop effectively, so the RXX handled fairly well in rough waters. This deep angle smoothed toward the aft, resulting in great planing and turning abilities.

The manufacturer labeled this unique design as “Active Handling Geometry.”The top deck housed a custom Jettrim racing seat rated for one rider.

Sea-Doo RXX Problems

Let’s face it; the Sea-Doo RXX was a factory racing jet ski that required the same attention and care as any high-performance racing craft.

When it came to regular maintenance, the RXX required a top-end rebuild at 20 hours and a bottom-end rebuild at about 50 hours. And exceeding the maintenance schedule was not recommended, as it often ended in a blown engine (typically caused by a piston pin bearing failure).

Yes, you read correctly, the top end of the RXX had to be refreshed after only 20 hours.


The biggest problem with the RXX was its small engine, featuring only two cylinders. Sea-Doo tuned this tiny 952cc twin engine up to a whopping 160 HP, resulting in low durability and reliability.

Because of this, the RXX required frequent wrenching while its parts came with hefty price tags.

In contrast, the competitors’ high-performance jet skis also provided 145-155 HP, but each of them utilized triple engines!

For example, the rival 2000 Yamaha GP1200R utilized a 1.176cc, 2-stroke triple rated at 155 HP, while the Kawasaki Ultra 150 had a “slanted” 1.176cc, 2-stroke, 145 HP triple.

As you can imagine, these engines were much more reliable and durable due to their bigger displacement and three-cylinder configuration.

What’s more, the RXX was sold with no factory warranty, which made the model less appealing for recreational riders.

On top of that, many racers claimed that the handling of the RXX was nowhere near as good as the last generation XP. Therefore, racers preferred the proven XP and didn’t show very much interest in the new model.

But even if they wanted to buy one, finding an RXX was hard to impossible. Since only about 500 of them were produced, meaning that this model didn’t even reach many Sea-Doo dealerships.

Nevertheless, the RXX remained an important milestone in Sea-Doo’s history, as the most powerful 2-stroke Sea-Doo ever built by the factory!
