Sea-Doo RX 951 Review

Sea-Doo released the RX family for the Millennium. This model was offered with three different engine options, including:

  • 2000-2002 Sea-Doo RX (dual-carb Rotax 947)
  • 2000-2003 Sea-Doo RX DI (direct-injected Rotax 947 DI)
  • 2001 Sea-Doo RXX (twin-pipe Rotax 947)
There’s no question that the base ’00-’02 RX was the most popular model in this breed, thanks to its simpler engine and affordable price tag.

Since this model was launched for the 2000 model year, it was often referred to as Sea-Doo RX Millennium. However, it was also known as RX 947 or RX 951, referring to its Rotax 947 RAVE engine.

This power source was the “Silver” 951cc, 2-stroke Rotax twin rated at 130 HP. Unlike its predecessor, the ’97 “White” Rotax 947, this unit was more reliable as the manufacturer had already gotten rid of the bugs.

Key features of the dual-carb “Silver” Rotax 947 were as follows:

This engine was placed in the all-new Sea-Doo RX hull and deck combination designed from scratch. Many riders claimed that this new platform was a significant improvement over the outdated GSX hull, and with good reason.

The design of this semi-V RX hull provided an excellent balance between planing abilities, performance, and comfort.

Thanks to its deep, 23.5-degree entry, the ski handled well in rough water conditions. This deep angle softened toward the hull’s rear, which resulted in great turning and planing abilities. The hull also utilized spray deflectors on the bow and twin stakes on the sides of the keel.

Sea-Doo called this design “Active Handling Geometry.”Regarding measurements, the RX platform was 113 inches long, 47 inches wide, and 41 inches high. Although it was 7 inches longer and 1.3 inches wider than the GSX-L, it still featured a smaller seat rated for two riders.

The dry weight of the RX was 605 pounds, which was a significant (74-pound) increase over the predecessor. Despite its larger dimensions and weight, the RX was faster while also offering aggressive and predictable rides.

Its top speed was about 60-62 mph in stock condition, which could be increased to nearly 70 mph with some aftermarket modifications. The fuel consumption of the ski was about 14.5 GPH at WOT, so its 15-gallon fuel tank provided about an hour of riding time.

Although the RX was a decent ski, it could never beat the popularity of the flagship XP 951. The latter was more lively due to a smaller body and better turning abilities.

Because of this, the RX was considered to be a “Jack of all trades, master of none” ski. It was too large for a 2-seater performance machine and too small for a family ski. Therefore, the model never became really popular among riders.

Standard features of the Sea-Doo RX 951 included:

  • One-piece seat rated for two riders
  • Seat Strap
  • Handlebar-mounted start/stop button
  • Safety Lanyard
  • Variable Trim System (VTS)

  • Speedometer
  • Peak speed
  • Average speed
  • Trip meter
  • Engine hour meter
  • Water temperature
  • Exterior temperature
  • Hourmeter
  • Chronometer
  • D.E.S.S. key
This LCD gauge utilized a display intended to blink an error code whenever one of the following circumstances occurred:
  • compass error (COMPAS)
  • maintenance (MAINT)
  • engine overheating (H-TEMP)
  • low fuel (FUEL-LO)
  • low oil (OIL LOW)
  • low voltage (12 V LOW)
  • fuel injection system sensors and major components (DI models)
Sea-Doo marketed the RX 951 from 2000 through 2002 without any major changes, while the fuel-injected RX DI was available until 2003.
