2000-2003 Sea-Doo RX DI Specs and Review [Video]
The Sea-Doo RX DI was basically equivalent to the dual-carb ’00-’02 RX 951 except for its fuel-injected Rotax 947 DI engine. The Canadian manufacturer marketed this model from 2000 through 2003 without any significant changes.

Sea-Doo RX DI Review
Sea-Doo released the 2-seater RX family for the 2000 model year, which included three different models:- 2000-2002 Sea-Doo RX (dual-carb Rotax 947)
- 2000-2003 Sea-Doo RX DI (direct-injected Rotax 947 DI)
- 2001 Sea-Doo RXX (twin-pipe Rotax 947)
For the Millennium, Sea-Doo released the RX with two different engine options. The base RX (a.k.a. RX 951) inherited its 130 HP, dual-carb Rotax 947 engine from its predecessor.
As the name suggests, the RX DI got the more advanced, fuel-injected Rotax 947 DI engine configuration. Unlike the semi-direct injected RFI, the Rotax DI engine featuring a “real” fuel-injection system.
The orbital direct fuel injection system featured an air compressor to atomize the fuel and boost its pressure. The fuel was injected into the high-pressure side of the engine via a set of injectors.
The RX DI shared its 947 DI engine with many popular Sea-Doo models, such as the GTX DI, the race-intended XP DI, and the 4-seater LRV DI.
Regarding specifications, the Rotax 947 DI was a 951cc, 2-stroke twin engine with many advanced features, including:
- Ignition: Digital inductive type
- Variable-rate oil injection
- Reed valve induction
- Open-loop water cooling
- 2 x NGK ZFR4F-11 spark plugs
- Orbital direct fuel injection (DI) system
- High-performance tuned pipe
- R.A.V.E. exhaust valves
- Electric starter
What’s more, according to the manufacturer, DI engine technology reduced emissions by 75 percent.
This cleaner operation made the RX DI compliant with the strict 2006 emissions-reduction requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency.
On top of that, this model offered a smooth throttle response and was much easier to start.
Despite this, the RX DI never became a best-selling model in the Sea-Doo fleet.
Why?
First, to the greatest regret of many RX fans, the 947 DI engine was much harder to troubleshoot and fix. Working on this engine required a lot of experience and special tools, including scanner software.
Therefore, if you are looking for a vintage Sea-Doo RX for sale, it’s highly recommended that you invest in a base carbed RX. Unless you are strongly mechanically skilled and looking for a challenge, you shouldn’t purchase any fuel-injected 2-stroke Sea-Doo model.
The engine of the RX DI model is nestled in an entirely new “RX platform” designed from scratch. The ski shared this body with its brothers, the RX 947 and the race-ready RXX.
The semi-V RX hull featured twin stakes on the sides of the keel and spray deflectors on the front.
Its deep (23.5-degree) entry was softened toward the stern, ensuring great cornering capabilities and rough water handling.
This “Active Handling Geometry” design was well balanced between handling, performance, and planing abilities.
Regarding measurements, the Sea-Doo RX platform was 113 inches long, 47 inches wide, and 41 inches high. Like the GSX-L, the RX DI also utilized a shorter, one-piece saddle rated for two riders.
The dry weight of the ski was 605 pounds, 74 pounds more than its predecessor. Despite its heavier and larger body, the RX was slightly faster and offered a predictable and aggressive riding experience.
Its top speed was 60-62 mph in stock conditions, which could be boosted up to 68-70 mph with some aftermarket mods. The acceleration of the RX DI was also impressive, as it could reach 60 mph in less than six seconds.
Standard features of the Sea-Doo RX DI included:
- One-piece seat rated for two riders
- Seat Strap
- Handlebar-mounted start/stop button
- Safety Lanyard
- D.E.S.S. key
- Variable Trim System (VTS)
- Choke Lever
- Shift Lever
- Speedometer
- Multifunction Gauge
- Information Center Gauge/Buttons
- Glove Box
- Fuel Tank Valve
- Front Storage Compartment
- Tool Kit
- Rear Grab Handle
- Rear Storage Basket
- Bow and Stern Eyelets
- Mooring Cleats
- Cargo Cleats
- Footboard
- Boarding Pads
- Boarding Platform
- Cooling System Bleed Outlet
- Flushing Connector
- Bilge Drain Plugs
- Reverse Gate
- Clock
- Tachometer
- Speedometer
- Peak speed
- Average speed
- Trip meter
- Engine hour meter
- Water temperature
- Exterior temperature
- Hourmeter
- Chronometer
- Compass error (COMPAS)
- Maintenance (MAINT)
- Engine overheating (H-TEMP)
- Low fuel (FUEL-LO)
- Low oil (OIL LOW)
- Low voltage (12 V LOW)
- Fuel injection system sensors and major components
On the other hand, the 2-seater RX was not nearly as successful as the amazing XP DI. The latter was more nimble and lively thanks to its smaller dimensions and unique “parabolic” hull design.
Because of this, the RX never became really popular among riders and was discontinue after only a few years of production.
