Supermarine MM01 Hyperjet Review

The demand for jet skis is huge, so it’s no surprise that more and more manufacturers are entering this market segment.

One of the latest players in the field is Bouvet Frères Marine, a French-based company owned and operated by Germain and Léopold Bouvet.

The Bouvet brothers had the dream of creating a new standard for personal watercraft design. As a result of their effort, the Electric Supermarine MM01 Hyperjet was born.

As to the special features of this machine, the creators claim this machine is the world’s first “Hyperjet.” The term “Hyper” is borrowed from the world of hypercars, while the “jet” refers to the jet propulsion system of the machine.

There’s no question that the MM01 stands out from the crowd in many ways. The creators consulted with aerospace engineers to develop a unique, aeronautical design.

The ski is built on a carbon Kevlar monocoque platform for the best power-to-weight ratio.

Monocoque is a special structural technique that eliminates the use of beams. This creates a lightweight but sturdy structure and is commonly used for building airplanes or other weight-sensitive machines.

The Kevlar additions produce an outstanding resistance and strength, ensuring amazing strength and handling.

The top deck of the MM01 incorporates a special cockpit that surrounds the rider. This innovative ergonomic design provides much more protection than the open cockpit of ordinary jet skis.

There are also large side air vents on each side of the top deck. They feature special carbon nozzles that route air into the hull to feed the engine to ensure an optimal temperature.

Standard features of the Supermarine MM01 are as follows:

  • 29-gallon front storage
  • Champagne holder
  • 3D printed titanium handlebars
  • Brake and reverse system
  • Large side vents
  • Onboard computer
  • Navigation interface with touchscreen
  • Front and led lighting
  • Interchangeable sponsons
  • Modular two-seater saddle with a removable cover
The 29-gallon front storage trunk is made of carbon and lined with leather. It also features high-resistance nets to hold gear in place.

There’s a smaller storage unit under the saddle that is intended for, believe it or not, storing a bottle of champagne. Of course, this machine was the dream of French designers!

Although it’s a nice addition, it’s questionable as to what extent the champagne will be shaken up during rides.

Another exciting part of the ski is its 3D printed titanium handlebars, which come with integrated navigation lights at both ends.

Interestingly, the handlebars don’t feature trigger throttle and brake levers. Instead, there’s a thumb throttle and brake paddle under the grips.

These titanium paddles give the handlebar a minimalist look; but they seem less practical than the industry-standard trigger levers.

Like any other modern jet ski, the MM01 is also equipped with an onboard computer connected to the general display. The latter is a huge curved touchscreen facing the rider, while the minimalist dashboard is placed just behind the handlebars.

The latter features some programmable push buttons that work in conjunction with the display. They provide abundant riding information and navigating functions, all of which can be customized to the rider’s needs.

Power source?

The Supermarine MM01 utilizes cutting-edge technology, including the latest generation full-electric motor and liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries.

According to the manufacturer, the advanced technology of this power source was inherited from Formula E.

The high-performance electric motor delivers an amazing performance of 300 HP (220 kW) and 450 Nm of torque. Thanks to this amazing performance, the claimed top speed of the Supermarine MM01 is 75 mph (121 km/h).

What’s more, its high-performance battery pack offers a whopping riding time of 2 hours on just one charge.

The ski comes with an ultra-fast charging system designed to fully charge the batteries in about 50 minutes. Charging can be done at the docks or on a larger boar or yacht.

Prices?

As you might expect, the Supermarine MM01 doesn’t come cheap.

Although its final price hasn’t been released, as reported by the manufacturer, this ski will have a hefty price tag ranging from $150,000 to $500,000. In contrast, the prices of regular jet skis from the 3 major manufacturers (Sea-Doo, Yamaha, Kawasaki) start at $6,000 and go up to $20,000.

Why is the Supermarine Hyperjet so expensive?

Besides its advanced technologies and materials, the rigorous hand-made manufacturing process adds significantly to the price. It sounds incredible, but building each Supermarine MM01 will require more than 500 man-hours.

Due to this manual production method, the ski will only be available in a limited edition of 30 units in two color schemes.

As the name suggests, the Black Edition has a black coat, while the Nacre version features a white (Mother of Pearl) coloration. Aside from the color difference, the two versions will be completely identical.

Bouvet plans to start testing the Supermarine MM01 in 2022, and it’s expected to reach the market in 2024.
